Alauddin Khilji had captured the Chittorgarh fort exactly 720 years ago. Even before he could enter the fort, the queen of Chittorgarh had embraced the fire by jumping into the Jauhar Kund along with thousands of Kshatriyas.
History is full of Jauhar stories, one such Jauhar happened about 720 years ago. This was the period when the Sultanate of Delhi was occupied by Alauddin Khilji. It is said that when Khilji won the Chittorgarh fort, Rani Padmini committed self-immolation by jumping into the Jauhar Kund along with thousands of Kshatriyas. Even today, that Jauhar Kund is there in Chittorgarh fort.
According to historians, August 26 was the date in 1303 when Rani Padmini embraced the fire of Jauhar along with thousands of Kshatriyas. Malik Mohammad Jayasi mentioned it in Padmavat in 1540. Apart from this, there is mention of that jewel of Rani Padmini in many other books as well.
Why did Rani Padmini do Jauhar
The original name of Rani Padmini was Padmavati, she was the daughter of the king of Sinhaldweep. She became the queen of Chittorgarh after her marriage to Raja Ratan Singh Singh. It is said that Rani Padmini was very beautiful, hearing stories of her beauty, Alauddin Khilji had marched on Chittorgarh, so that he could get Rani Padmini. However, there are differences of opinion among historians regarding this fact. According to historian Dr. Gopinath Sharma, the main reason for Khilji's attack was not Rani Padmini, but Chittorgarh fort, because this fort had great commercial importance. The routes to Gujarat, Malwa, Madhya Pradesh, Sindh etc used to pass through Chittorgarh only.
When Khilji attacked Chittorgarh
After the assassination of uncle Jalaluddin Khilji, Alauddin Khilji took over the Sultanate of Delhi. However, his reign was full of challenges, as Hindu and Rajput rulers were constantly in rebellion. In such a situation, Khilji turned to Chittorgarh to suppress the Rajput rulers. Some historians believe that Khilji attacked Chittorgarh only for Rani Padmini, but some historians oppose this fact.
Chittorgarh fort was strong
Alauddin Khilji had a huge army. When he left Delhi, he too had no idea that there would be so much struggle in Chittorgarh. Khilji's army could not enter the fort even after wishing. In such a situation, the army camped outside the fort and blocked the way of movement. He camped here continuously for six months. During this time neither anything to eat or drink could come from outside nor could anyone go out.
When King Ratan Singh declared war
Time was passing, the logistics inside the fort were decreasing. In such a situation, Raja Ratan Singh declared war to protect the people. A fierce battle took place. Raja Ratan Singh bravely fought Khilji, but the Rajput army could not stand in front of his huge army. According to historians, even before Khilji entered the fort, Queen Padmini had committed Jauhar with thousands of Kshatriyas.
