Actually, we are talking about Vanshinarayan Temple which is present in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. To go here one has to approach the Urgam Valley in Chamoli. This temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, hence its name is called Vanshinarayan Temple. The local people also call the temple as Vanshinarayan. The idols of Lord Shiva, Ganesha and Van Devi are also installed in the temple.
This temple opens only on Raksha Bandhan
It is believed that the doors of the temple remain closed throughout the year and are opened only on the day of Rakhi. On the day of Rakshabandhan, local people clean the temple and offer prayers. It is said that the locals also celebrate the festival of Rakhi here. Before celebrating the festival, people worship in the temple.
Mythology
According to beliefs, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Vamana to crush the ego of King Bali. Meanwhile, King Bali sought the promise of making Lord Vishnu his gatekeeper. Mata Lakshmi wanted to bring him back and so Narada Muni gave her a solution to tie a defense thread to King Bali. The festival of Rakshabandhan started being celebrated only after the mother stayed here in the remote valley.
Butter offerings
There is a legend associated with this temple. It is said that the Vamana avatar of Lord Vishnu got salvation here. People make prasad near the temple, for which even butter comes from every house. After the prasad is prepared, it is offered to Lord Vishnu.

This temple is 12 kilometers away from Urgam village. One has to walk a few kilometers to reach here. If you are going by train then you have to get down at Haridwar Rishikesh railway station. By the way, the distance from Rishikesh to Joshimath is about 225 kms. The valley is 10 km from Joshimath and from here you can reach Urgam village. After this the path has to be covered on foot.
