What is jelly belly cancer? Find out about this 'rare disease' by these common symptoms

Pseudomyxoma peritonei ie PMP is considered a rare cancer. It is produced in the body in the form of a small polyp. Then slowly it spreads through the wall of the appendix.

Jelly Belly Cancer: Have you ever heard about Jelly Belly Cancer? If not, then today definitely know in detail about this deadly cancer. Because this disease is affecting 215 people every year in Britain and is also causing death. Jelly Belly cancer is also known as Pseudomyxoma Peritonei. It is a type of tumor, which grows slowly and causes the production of a jelly-like substance called mucin in the abdomen and pelvis.

Jelly belly cancer begins as a polyp or lump on the inner lining of the appendix. Apart from the appendix, it can also start from organs like the large intestine, ovaries and bladder. According to the Mirror report, Pseudomyxoma peritonei ie PMP is considered a rare cancer. It is produced in the body in the form of a small polyp. Then slowly it spreads through the wall of the appendix and finally keeps the cancer cells in the wall of the abdominal cavity. It is also known as peritoneum. These cancer cells produce mucus, which gets accumulated in the stomach in the form of a jelly-like substance. This jelly-like substance is called mucin.

How is PMP spread?

Pseudomyxoma does not spread through the peritoneum or PMP through the blood or lymphatic system. Although it remains in the stomach and its size also keeps on increasing. Because of this, there is difficulty in breathing and walking. Apart from this, the body is not able to absorb the food eaten properly. PMP is not at all like other types of cancer. It spreads only in the organs present inside or around the stomach.

Symptoms of PMP

When PMP or jelly belly cancer spreads, mucus starts to be produced. This mucus only accumulates inside the stomach, after which this deadly cancer starts. Mucus works to put pressure on the intestine as well as on other parts of the body. According to Cancer Research UK, many times people mistake the symptoms of PMP for ovarian cancer. Because ovarian cancer can also cause abdominal swelling. Not only this, some cells of ovarian cancer also produce mucin.
