The Kerala government has sought to change the name of the state under Article 3 of the Constitution, this article empowers the Parliament of the country to change the boundary of the state, create a new state, expand the scope of the state or change its name.
The South Indian state of Kerala has decided to change its name. On August 9, 2023, a proposal to this effect has been passed by the Legislative Assembly. The state government has sent the proposal to change the name of Kerala to Keralam as per the rules. With the approval of the Centre, Kerala will become Keralam. If the Center has not taken any decision or approved the proposal, then the name change will not be possible.
Kerala Chief Minister P Vijayan introduced this proposal in the Legislative Assembly, which was passed unanimously. CM Vijayan has also given the reason for changing the name. They say that the state language of Kerala is Malayalam. According to the language, its name should be Keralam. He argues that this demand was raised for Malayalam speaking people even during the freedom struggle movement but the name of the state Kerala is written in the first schedule of the constitution, so it could not be done at that time. Now, taking care of the public sentiment, this proposal has been passed and sent to the Central Government.
What is Article Three?
The state government has requested the central government to implement its demand immediately. The Kerala government, citing Article 3 of the Constitution, has demanded the name of the state be changed to Keralam. Under this Article 3 of the Constitution, the Government of India does the work of formation of new states, expansion of existing states or renaming of any area etc. The Parliament has the special right to use it to change the boundary of the state. Can form a new state. Can increase the scope of the state. The name of the state can be changed. This means that the Article of the Indian Constitution gives unlimited authority to the Center in the case of three states.
