Swaminathan was born on 7 August 1925 in Chennai (then Kumbakonam, Madras Presidency). His father was a surgeon. Swaminathan holds a BSc degree in Zoology from Maharaja's College, Thiruvananthapuram and a BSc degree in Agricultural Science from Coimbatore Agricultural University. After this, he took a master's degree in Agricultural Science from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) in the year 1949.

After post graduation, Swaminathan went to Cambridge University. In 1952, he did his PhD from here. Came to India in 1954 and became the faculty of IARC, New Delhi. He worked as director here for 11 years from 1961 to 1972. As an agricultural scientist, Swaminathan received many awards.

In 1961, Swaminathan was awarded the SS Bhatnagar Award for his significant contribution to biological sciences.

He was also awarded the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership in 1971.

In recognition of his great contribution, Swaminathan was awarded the first World Food Prize in 1987.

In the year 2000, he was honored with the Mahatma Gandhi Award at UNESCO.

In 2007, Lal Bahadur Shastri Award was added to his name.
