Storm and flood have caused terrible devastation in the African country Libya. Hurricane Daniel has caused devastating floods. Due to this, more than 2000 people have died. Most of the devastation has occurred in the eastern region. Multi-storey buildings collapsed in the mud due to the storm. Most of the destruction has occurred in Derna. Many people have been swept away in the water and thousands are missing. Turkey has sent 3 planes to provide rescue teams and help to Libya.
Prime Minister Osama Hamad has declared three days of mourning and ordered flags to be flown at half mast across the country. He told that the flood that came after the devastating storm Daniel has caused huge devastation in Derna. After this the city has been declared a disaster area. Osama Hamad, head of Libya's eastern parliament-backed administration, confirmed the death toll on Monday. Osama said that the situation in Libya is terrible due to torrential rains.
Drowned cars, collapsed buildings, strong torrents of water on the roads
Osama Hamad said that videos on social media showed submerged cars, collapsed buildings and strong streams of water on the roads. Storm Daniel swept across the region and destroyed homes in several coastal towns, with the town of Derna “completely cut off” after two old dams broke. Additionally, hospitals in the eastern city of Bayda were evacuated after flooding caused by a major storm, according to a video uploaded to Facebook by the Medical Center of Bayda, CNN reported.
Storm Daniel wreaked havoc
According to CNN, this rain is the result of the remnants of a very strong low pressure system, officially called Storm Daniel by the national meteorological organizations of Southeastern Europe. Last week, the storm caused devastating flooding in Greece before moving into the Mediterranean Sea and turning into a tropical cyclone known as Medicane.
Huge destruction in Darna city
Othman Abduljalil, the health minister of the eastern Libyan government, announced the death toll on Monday afternoon. He said that at least 50 people are missing. Abduljalil said that this number of dead does not include the number of Derna city which was declared a disaster affected area. The situation here was not yet clear. The city's main medical center said the dead included 12 people from the eastern city of Bayda. Seven other people were reported dead in the coastal city of Susa in northeastern Libya, according to the ambulance and emergency authority. The minister said seven other people were reported killed in the towns of Shahatt and Omar al-Mukhtar.
Many people reported missing
The death of one more person was confirmed on Sunday. The man was in his car and was trapped in flooding in the eastern city of Marz, according to Walid al-Arfi, a spokesman for the government-run emergency response agency in eastern Libya. According to media reports, dozens of other people are reported missing in the flood and officials fear that they may have died in the flood.
Rain and bad weather warning
