Big announcement may be made on free ration and gas cylinder, government spends Rs 4 lakh crore

The Government of India is going to evaluate subsidy schemes like National Food Security Act and Gas Cylinder. So that fraud can be stopped and it can be ensured that eligible people are getting the benefits of these schemes. The government spends Rs 4 lakh crore on these subsidy schemes.

NITI Aayog will soon evaluate India's largest subsidy schemes, the National Food Security Act and LPG subsidy, to rationalize expenditure, prevent fraud and ensure that benefits reach eligible candidates. Or not. The Development Monitoring and Evaluation Office of NITI Aayog has invited proposals for the Central Coordination Agency for the evaluation of two schemes. Every year approximately Rs 4,00,000 crore is spent from the government treasury on these two schemes.

The DMEO said in the RFP documents that the government implements the largest public food and nutritional safety measure in the world through the National Food Security Act (NFSA) enacted in 2013. The surprising thing is that despite such huge expenditure on food safety in India, the results have not been particularly good. India's share in global hunger is about 30 percent.

What is the logic of evaluation?

Explaining the logic behind the valuation of LPG subsidy, DMEO further said that India is the third largest energy consumer in the world after China and America. DMEO further added that the current consumption of LPG in India has increased to 12.3 per cent of the total petroleum products as compared to 1.13 per cent of kerosene. Ongoing schemes will potentially increase LPG usage further, making their evaluation mandatory.

Demand is continuously increasing

The cost of implementing food subsidy under TPDS was Rs 4,22,618.11 crore as per the revised estimates for 2021, while the cost of implementing MDM and ICDS was Rs 12,900 crore and Rs 17,252.21 crore, respectively. According to DMEO, the consumption of petroleum and natural gas in India is more than one-third of the country's energy needs. Apart from this, with the increasing population, economic development and demand for clean energy, the demand for oil and gas has been increasing in the last few years.
