Canadian farmers will have to bear the brunt of Justin Trudeau's mistake, there will be huge losses

According to government data, in the year 2022-23, India had imported 4.85 lakh tonnes of pulses worth Rs 3,012 crore from Canada. Between April and June this year, India has purchased about one lakh tonnes of pulses from Canada.

The impact of the ongoing tension between India and Canada is now visible on trade as well. After the allegations by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the sale of Canadian lentils in India has decreased. In such a situation, the price of pulses has declined in Canada, due to which farmers are not getting the same rates as before. It is being said that India can limit trade relations with Canada to show its status. Meanwhile, there is news that Delhi Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) has demanded from the Central Government to ban the import of pulses from Canada.

CTI has also written a letter to Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal regarding this. In the letter, he has urged the Union Minister to ban the import of pulses to create economic pressure on Canada. Actually, 23 lakh tonnes of pulses are consumed in India. But only 16 lakh tonnes of pulses are produced here. In such a situation, to meet the demand, the central government has to import pulses from abroad.

There could be huge financial loss

Last year, the Indian government imported 4.85 lakh tonnes of pulses from Canada, worth about $370 million and this was more than half of its total pulse imports. In such a situation, if India reduces the import of pulses from Canada, it may suffer huge economic loss.

Has reached $ 770 per metric ton

Kevin Price, senior export trader at crop trader Parish & Heimbaker, says that India trades pulses on a large scale with Canada. In such a situation, if the export of pulses is affected, then it is a matter of concern for Canadian traders. However, he also said that since Justin Trudeau's statement, Indian offers for Canadian supplies have fallen by 6% to around $770 per metric tonne.

Importing pulses from different countries

Nitin Gupta, senior vice president of Olam Agri India, a major importer, said industry officials are concerned about the tension between the two countries. If trade restrictions are imposed by the governments due to the current tension between the two countries, there will be a lot of loss. However, officials say that India is diversifying imports of pulses. Now it is not overly dependent on any one country for the import of pulses. Now he is importing pulses from different countries.

attitude will pay a price

India has increased the import of lentils from Australia to about two lakh tonnes. Meanwhile, India has also started importing pulses from Russia. In August, a consignment of Russian pulses landed at Chennai port. If India stops importing lentils from Canada, it could further reduce prices in Canada and Canadian farmers will have to pay the price for Trudeau's careless attitude against India.

have compromised the interests of their country

At the same time, experts say that if Canadian farmers have to suffer losses in the coming years due to reduction in Indian imports, then it will be proved that Trudeau has compromised with the interests of his country for his narrow electoral gains.
