People with household life are observing Krishna Janmashtami fast today i.e. on 6th September and will give birth to Krishna at 12 midnight. After this, Dahi Handi will be broken the next day. This festival of breaking the dahi handi after the birth of Krishna is also worth seeing. This is especially seen in Maharashtra, where a group of Govindas go to different places and break pots tied at a height. The fun of Dahi Handi is also seen in places like Mathura, Vrindavan and Gokul.
It is believed that Bal Krishna often used to break pots to steal butter in the village and hence he is also called butter thief. This festival is dedicated to him only. Therefore, a program of breaking Dahi Handi is also organized during Janmashtami. It is believed that by breaking the Dahi Handi, Shri Krishna remembers his childhood and becomes very happy. Breaking Dahi Handi on Janmashtami is considered very auspicious. Every year Dahi Handi is celebrated on the next morning of Shri Krishna Janmashtami. Come let's know the auspicious time to break Dahi Handi this year.
Auspicious time to break Dahi Handi
This year Shri Krishna Janmashtami is being celebrated on 6th September and Dahi Handi will be celebrated on the very next day i.e. 7th September. The auspicious time for breaking Dahi Handi is on 7th September from morning to evening. On the day of this festival, a handi filled with curd is tied with the help of a rope at a height in the square-intersections, street-locality or any field. Then devotees of Shri Krishna who are called Govinda come from far away to break that pot. A group of Govindas climb on top of each other to form a pyramid and try to break the handi. It is believed that every year Dahi Handi is broken by Lord Krishna himself.
Importance of breaking curd pot
The festival of Shri Krishna Janmashtami is incomplete without Dahi Handi, so there is a tradition of breaking Dahi Handi every year on Janmashtami. This festival is dedicated to Shri Krishna. Dahi Handi is considered a symbol of Nandlal's childhood pastimes. Shri Krishna loved milk, curd and butter very much, so Bal Gopal often used to steal milk, curd and butter from the neighboring houses of Vrindavan in his childhood. Because of this, Shri Krishna is also called butter thief. Troubled by Kanhaiya, the gopis used to keep butter in a handi and hang it above with the help of a rope, but still butter thieves used to steal butter by breaking the pot with the help of their friends and used to eat it with great love.
