Salt Consumption In India: Salt is a very important part of food. Eating without salt is not enjoyable. But remember, salt is necessary but not too much. If we eat too much salt every day then it can harm our body. Excess salt can increase blood pressure and cause heart and kidney diseases. Therefore, only a little salt should be eaten every day. Doctors advise not to consume more than 5 grams of salt in a day. 

According to a study, on an average every person in India consumes 8 grams of salt per day, whereas the daily salt limit prescribed by health experts is only 5 grams. This study has been published in the prestigious journal 'Nature Portfolio'. For this study, a sample of 3000 adults was taken for survey under the National Non-Communicable Disease Surveillance Survey (NNMS). In this survey, researchers examined the sodium levels in the urine of the participants, because sodium is the main component of salt. 

Men are eating more salt than women.

The amount of salt consumed by the participants was estimated using a globally accepted formula. The study revealed that people of all age groups, irrespective of socio-economic status, are consuming more salt than the prescribed daily limit. Many worrying facts have emerged in this analysis. According to the study, people of all age groups, whether men or women, employed or unemployed, are consuming more salt than the maximum salt limit prescribed by doctors. But men are consuming more salt than women and employed people are consuming more salt than the unemployed. On an average, men were consuming 8.9 grams of salt per day, while women were consuming less than this, i.e. 7.9 grams of salt per day. That is, women were consuming slightly less salt than men, although they were also consuming more salt than the maximum salt limit of 5 grams per day recommended by doctors. 

People with obesity eat more salt. 

In this study it was also found that in people who consume tobacco, the amount of salt was found to be 8.3 grams per day. Whereas those who were suffering from obesity, their salt intake was highest i.e. 9.2 grams per day. Apart from this, the salt intake of people who had high blood pressure was also 8.5 grams per day. In comparison to all these, people who did not consume tobacco, were of normal weight or had normal blood pressure, had less amount of salt. 

Too much blood pressure can make you high 

Remember, salt contains sodium which can increase our blood pressure. Excess sodium increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. Therefore, do not eat more than the amount of salt recommended by doctors. We need to eat only 5 grams of salt daily. Salt contains sodium which is essential for our nerves and muscles. But if we eat too much salt then it can increase blood pressure. It can also cause heart attack and stroke. Low sodium salt which contains more potassium is good for healthy people. But people suffering from diabetes, heart disease and kidney disease should not consume it. Dr Prashant Mathur, director of the ICMR-National Center for Disease Informatics and Research, who led the study, told TOI that if we reduce the amount of sodium in our daily diet by at least 1.2 grams, then in people who have high blood pressure, Have to take medicines,
