These days, relations between India and Canada have turned sour regarding Khalistani supporters and terrorists. Both the countries are face to face over the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Amidst all this, the data of the Ministry of External Affairs has revealed that in the last five years, more than one lakh Indians have taken Canadian citizenship. Know which country is the first choice of Indians.
Canada becomes the first choice of Indians after America
The Times of India, quoting the data of the Ministry of External Affairs, has said that between January 2018 and June 2023, 1.6 lakh Indians have given up their citizenship. That means, about 20 percent of those who gave up Indian citizenship chose Canadian citizenship. In these five years, after America, Indians preferred to settle in Canada the most. Apart from these, Australia and Britain were also the favorites of Indians.
58 percent chose America and Canada
The Ministry of External Affairs has said that overall from January 2018 to June 2023, about 8.4 lakh Indians gave up their Indian citizenship and became citizens of 114 different countries. Out of which 58 percent are those people who chose only America or Canada. The number of people renouncing Indian citizenship increased from 1.3 lakh in 2018 to 2.2 lakh in 2022. In the first half of 2023, more than 87 thousand Indians have opted for foreign citizenship.
Why are Indians settling in Canada and America?
Immigration expert Vikram Shroff told TOI that Indians prefer to take citizenship of developed countries where English is the main language. There are many reasons for immigration. These include high standard living, children's education, employment opportunities and quality health care. He said that countries like Canada and Australia are attracting foreign talent by making it easier and quicker for people to obtain residency and citizenship.
