It's been 4 months since CJI reprimanded the Speaker on the disqualification of MLAs in Maharashtra; you haven't taken any decision

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said during the hearing that the Maharashtra Speaker had been directed to take a decision within a reasonable time. The complaint is that even after four months have passed, the Speaker has not taken any steps for the decision.

While hearing the petition related to disqualification of Shinde faction MLAs in Maharashtra, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud has reprimanded the Speaker of the Assembly. He said that the Speaker was instructed to take a decision within a reasonable time. The complaint is that even after four months have passed, the Speaker has not taken any steps for the decision. Despite the Supreme Court's decision of May 11, the Speaker has not yet taken any decision on the disqualification of the MLAs.

Court asked for time limit

The Supreme Court has asked for a timeline from the Maharashtra Speaker for the disposal of the case. The court has asked for a time limit of two weeks. CJI DY Chandrachud said, this matter cannot continue indefinitely. The speaker will have to decide on disqualification. The Speaker will have to follow the dignity of the Supreme Court. For your information, let us tell you that the Uddhav Thackeray group has filed a petition in the Supreme Court to direct the Speaker to take an early decision on the disqualification of Eknath Shinde and his group's MLAs. When Shiv Sena split last year, the Uddhav Thackeray faction had demanded disqualification of 16 MLAs.

The CJI expressed his displeasure and said that it seems as if nothing has happened. The Speaker should have taken care of the dignity of the Supreme Court. The court had given the decision. CJI said that you cannot say that I will hear it at the appropriate time. You have to keep giving dates.

As per the court order, the Speaker needs to take a decision on the proceedings within a reasonable period of time. The court said that we expect respect and dignity towards the instructions issued using constitutional power. We now direct that procedural instructions will be issued by the Speaker within a week setting a time limit for completing the proceedings.
