About 81,410 to 137,880 people die every year due to snake bites. The most affected are agricultural workers and children. Children have smaller bodies, so they are more affected. According to a new report by the World Health Organization (WHO), the number of deaths and disabilities caused by snake bites every year is very high across the world. According to the report, between 2019 and 2020, more than 12 lakh people have died due to snake bites in India alone.

It has been said in the report that due to lack of health facilities in rural areas, not getting proper treatment for snake bite is a big problem. Moreover, many countries do not have a system to collect statistics about snake bite cases. WHO says that to curb deaths due to snake bites, it is important to ensure availability of anti-venom, train health workers and spread awareness among people. There is also a need to focus on increasing access to health facilities in remote areas. 

What happens to the body due to snake bite?

Snake bite has many adverse effects on the body. There is severe pain at the site of bite and swelling occurs there. Snake venom dissolves in the blood and reaches other parts of the body, which can cause problems like bleeding, muscle weakness and paralysis. Important organs like lungs, heart, kidneys and brain can also be affected by poison. Sometimes the bitten part has to be amputated. If treatment is not received at the right time, snake bite can also result in death. 

WHO took steps:

The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed serious concern over the deaths and disabilities caused by snake bites. WHO has taken several steps to address this problem. He has formed a team to work on the problem of snake bites. This team has set a target of reducing deaths and disabilities caused by snake bites by 2030. WHO has made a plan to deal with snake bites. This includes making people aware, providing proper treatment, strengthening hospitals and providing financial help.
