A magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck near Geraldine in the center of New Zealand's South Island. According to government seismic monitor GeoNet, initial reports indicated no injuries or damage. Geonet said more than 14,000 people reported feeling the shaking, some as far north as Auckland in the North Island. Sarah Hussey, a farmer near the epicenter, said the earthquake was very powerful. However, he said that there was no loss here.

Scott Shannon, deputy mayor of Timaru, near the epicenter, told Radio NZ there were no immediate reports of damage but an investigation was ongoing. The quake was not far from the site of a magnitude 6.3 earthquake in 2011 that killed 185 people and caused major damage in the South Island city of Christchurch.
Strong earthquakes even in February-March
Earlier, strong earthquake tremors were felt in New Zealand on March 4. The intensity of the earthquake was measured at 6.9 on the Richter scale. According to PTWC, this earthquake occurred in the Pacific region north of New Zealand. However, there was no loss of life or property due to the earthquake. There was also an earthquake of 6.1 magnitude in New Zealand on 15 February.
