The British government has recently taken a decision to reduce deaths due to suicide. In this, a plan is going to be made to limit the sale of over-the-counter medicines containing paracetamol. According to the news published in Sky News, this is an important part of the National Suicide Prevention Strategy to stop the increasing suicide cases. According to the report, how to stop the decline in suicide deaths since 2018? It has been clearly stated in the outlet that this new policy has been devised to prevent suicide in schools and colleges across the country.

A person can buy only 2 packets of paracetamol at a time

Such a strategy was brought 10 years ago. The policy states that doctors and health experts will review whether reducing the number of paracetamol people buy in shops could help reduce the rising number of suicide cases in Britain. According to the news published in Telegraph, at present people there can buy only 2 packets of medicine containing paracetamol. There are 16 tablets of 500 mg each.

The government has asked the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to consider taking more strict action. Ministers in Britain have promised to reduce the suicide rate in England within two and a half years.

A 2018 research published in Cambridge University Press states that paracetamol is the most common drug used as poison to kill oneself in the UK and it is very dangerous for the liver.

The study was based on an analysis of data from 80 patients in hospitals using measures of depression and suicidal intent, information collected through the Oxford Monitoring System for Suicide Attempts, as well as results of liver function tests.

The National Health Service (NHS) said more than 5,000 people die by suicide each year, adding that it received 200,000 calls to its crisis lines every month.
