According to the mythology of Sanatan Dharma, once upon a time there lived a Brahmin husband-wife pair in a state. He had two children, one son and one daughter. When his children grew up, he married his daughter to a good boy. After everything went well for some time, his son-in-law died. According to the scriptures, while observing the vow of widowhood, his daughter started living in a hut on the banks of a river.
After some time passed, suddenly worms started infesting the daughter's body. Seeing such a condition of her daughter, the wife became very sad and asked her husband what was the reason for this? The husband meditated and saw the deeds of his daughter in her previous birth. It came to light from him that in her previous life her daughter had touched the utensils in the house during her menstruation. The husband told that in this life he did not observe the fast of Rishi Panchami, that is why he is facing so much trouble in life. After knowing all this, the daughter observed the fast of Rishi Panchami with full rituals.
