Rabindranath Tagore's Shantiniketan, the university town in Birbhum district of West Bengal, has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. This was announced by the international agency on Sunday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where the 45th session of the World Heritage Committee is being held. This program will run till 25 September 2023.
Shantiniketan has become the 41st UNESCO World Heritage Site in India and the third in West Bengal after Sundarban National Park and Darjeeling Mountain Railway. Last year, the state's Durga Puja got a place in the "Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity" under UNESCO.
Indira Gandhi studied
Rabindranath Tagore's father Devendranath Tagore had established an ashram on seven acres of land in the year 1863. There is Visva-Bharati there today. Former Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi has a special connection with Shantiniketav. After completing her school education in the year 1934-35, Indira took admission in Visva-Bharati University built by Rabindranath Tagore in Shantiniketan. It was here that Rabindranath Tagore named her “Priyadarshini”.
University Vice Chancellor Bidyut Chakraborty said that today we all are happy to receive this recognition. The path was shown by our Guru Rabindranath Tagore. Despite so many difficulties, Tagore established this university. Later others carried forward his legacy. Today we are trying our best to maintain this heritage and pass it on to the next generation. On behalf of Visva-Bharati, I thank everyone for this.
PM Modi expressed happiness
Reacting to the inclusion in the World Heritage List, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he is happy that Santiniketan, a symbol of the vision of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore and the rich cultural heritage of India, has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. This is a proud moment for all Indians.
