In fact, when he reached Britain, he read an article focused on Florence Chadwick, the first American woman to cross the English Channel, and from here the idea of ​​doing something different in swimming came into his mind. But it was not easy at all. For this, continuous practice and skilled trainers were required.

learned from failure

Mihir started it in a normal way. As they learned, their confidence increased and they were able to decide that they too would cross the English Channel. Will bring glory to India. This continuous practice was not easy because other work got left behind and Mihir kept moving forward in swimming. Some of his attempts also failed but he learned from every failure and kept trying again and again with more energy and finally on 27 September 1958 the day came when he became the fourth fastest swimmer to cross the English Channel in 14.45 hours. Emerged as the first Indian and also the first Asian.

This success in Mihir's life filled him with passion. They kept measuring one ocean after another. Continuing to practice, Mihir took the next task of swimming from Talai Mannar in Sri Lanka to Dhanushkoti in India. In this he swam for 25.44 hours. This was his second adventurous expedition. Financial difficulties also arose. Then this matter came to the knowledge of PM Indira Gandhi. She solved the financial problems.

Indian Navy ships accompanied them

Two ships of the Indian Navy accompanied them. This area of ​​the sea is said to be full of sharks and poisonous snakes. The journey which started on April 6, 1966 was completed the next day. After this Mihir made many records. Crossed Gibraltar Dar-e-Daniel on 24th August this year. It took eight hours and one minute. This place is between Spain and Morocco.

In this way, in the year 1966 itself, Mihir made five important records in his name. After this, his name started ringing all over the world. The swimmers looked at him with greedy eyes. Would have been inspired.

Became the first person to cross the Dardanelles

On 12 September 1966, Mihir became the first person in the world to cross the Dardanelles and on 21 September he crossed the Phosphorus. Crossing the Panama Canal in length began on 29 October and the journey was completed on 31 October. Mihir spent 34.15 hours in this. In this way, he was recorded as the first person in the world who crossed the seven seas.

Next year i.e. in 1967, the Government of India honored him with Padma Vibhushan. He was also the President of Explorers Club of India. Barrister by profession Mihir Sen was born on 16 November 1930 in Purulia, West Bengal. He died on 11 June 1997 in Kolkata. He was also given a place in the Guinness Book of World Records.
