Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has made a big announcement for those promoting organ donation in the state. He has said that whatever person donates his organs for the purpose of giving life to others, his contribution will be considered as a sacrifice. He said that the last rites of the person who donated organs will be performed with full state honours. Chief Minister Stalin said that this decision of the Tamil Nadu government has been taken to promote organ donation in the state.
Organ Donation Day is celebrated every year on 23 September in Tamil Nadu since 2008. On the same occasion, Chief Minister MK Stalin announced that his government will give full state honors to the last rites of the organ donors of the state. This state honor will be given to those people who have saved someone's life by donating organs.
Demand to bring transparency in organ donation
This announcement of Chief Minister MK Stalin is being praised. Appreciating this, Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) chief Anbumani Ramadoss said that there can be no greater honor than this. Because this decision honors the selfless sacrifice of those who were declared 'brain dead'.
Along with this, the PMK leader has also urged the government to bring transparency in organ donation. He also said that people who get treatment from government hospitals should be given priority in the allocation of organs.
More than 6000 organ donations so far
In the year 2008, when organ transplant started in the state, more than 17 hundred people had come forward to donate their organs. According to the information, organs have been donated to more than 6000 patients in the state so far. These include heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, intestines, cornea, bone, skin transplant.
At present the number of organ transplant units in government medical colleges of the state is thirteen. Along with this, the state government has decided to develop facilities in this regard in twenty-seven other medical colleges.
