Know what is OCI card, when and how it was started, what rights the card holder gets and what restrictions are applicable on them in India.
What is OCI card?
OCI means Overseas Citizen of India. This card allows foreign citizens of Indian origin to live and work in India indefinitely. If understood in simple language, Indian people who have settled abroad and taken citizenship there can avail the benefit of this facility. Not only in India, there are rules for taking such dual citizenship in many countries of the world.
When and how did this card start?
Indian Citizenship Law says that if a person takes citizenship of another country, he will have to give up Indian citizenship. At that time, there were many thousands of people who had taken citizenship of another country, but their connection with India remained. In such a situation, after coming to India, they had to apply for visa again and again.
To solve this problem of people of Indian origin, the Government of India started the PIO card in 2003, which meant Person of Indian Origin. It was issued for 10 years, but on the occasion of Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in 2006, the Government of India announced to give OCI cards to such people. Despite this, both the cards remained in circulation, but in 2015, PIO card was abolished and OCI card was retained.
Who can get OC I Card?
This card will be issued to those people who have been citizens of India or their parents have been Indian citizens. After issuing the card, India gives permission to the card holder to work here throughout his life and do all types of financial transactions. This is the reason why this card remains lifetime valid. The cardholder does not require a visa to come to India.
What can card holders do and what not?
Some special instructions have been issued regarding OCI cardholders. Like ordinary Indians, they have many rights, but are prohibited from doing some work. Like- he cannot contest elections. Cannot vote in India. Cannot work on constitutional post or do government job. Cannot buy cultivable land.
