Bengaluru hosted the World Coffee Conference-2023 to be held for the first time in Asia. The program was organized from 25 to 28 September. The International Coffee Organization (ICO) was established in 1963 with the support of the United Nations. Before this, an International Coffee Agreement was also signed in the year 1962. After that the need for this organization was felt. ICO represents 93 percent of the world's coffee production. Its headquarters is in London. The basic objective of the organization is to work on policy and research according to the needs of the market, keeping in mind the interests of all shareholders related to coffee.
What is Indian Coffee Board?
Indian Coffee Board is an integral part of the government. It was formed under the Coffee Act 1942. The Board discharges its responsibilities directly under the administrative control of the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry. The board is operated from Bengaluru only. There are 33 members including the Chairman. The main responsibility of the board is to work on research and development.
In which states is coffee cultivated?
In India, coffee is cultivated in hilly areas. Karnataka accounts for 70 percent of the total production in the country. Other major coffee producing states are Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. Coffee is also cultivated in North-East states. Arabica is the most delicious variety of coffee in the whole world. Arabica cultivation is 60 percent in India.
How many farmers cultivate coffee?
The Government of India provides initial assistance to coffee farmers ranging from Rs 50 thousand to Rs 3 lakh. This also includes subsidy. There is a provision for payment in two installments. At present, about three lakh farmers are cultivating coffee in India. Most of them are small farmers. 80 percent of the coffee grown here is exported. The rest is used within the country.
The history of its cultivation in the country is linked to the name of Baba Budan Giri, who went on a pilgrimage to Mecca in the 15th century and brought seven seeds with him from there and planted them on the Chandragiri hills in Mysore. Farmers started cultivating it from the year 1670 and today South Indian states are the leaders in coffee production.
Brazil produces the most coffee in the world, about 40 percent. Other major producing countries are India, Vietnam, Colombia, Indonesia, Peru, Uganda, Guatemala, Honduras and Ethiopia.
