Eleven people were killed when the roof of a Roman Catholic church collapsed during a mass in Ciudad Madero, an oil-refining city in the northern Gulf of Mexico. The dead include three children. The office of the Tamaulipas State Security Spokesperson informed that about 60 people were injured in this accident. Officials said about 100 people were inside the church when the roof collapsed.
Josefina Ramirez, who survived this accident, said in a post on Facebook that I felt that I would not be able to see my family again. He said in his post that I cannot tell how we got out. Ramirez later told The New York Times that his 3-year-old granddaughter and other relatives also survived.
Accident during mass prayer
Tamaulipas security spokesman Jorge Cuellar said the rescue operation had ended and no one else was expected to be injured. Rev. Angel Vargas, the priest who was leading the mass at the time of the accident, said that some people have left this world and some of us are left. May those who have gone rest in peace.
Why did the roof of the church fall?
However, it was not immediately clear why the roof of the church collapsed. Cuellar said experts are arriving to determine the cause of this unfortunate accident. However, it is being speculated that this accident happened due to lack of maintenance of the church.
Governor Americo Villarreal expressed grief
Let us inform that after the accident, apart from the Red Cross, public agencies including the State Police, State Civil Defense Office and National Guard were involved in the rescue operation. Tamaulipas Governor Americo Villarreal said on social media that his condolences to all the families who lost their loved ones in this unfortunate accident.
