At that time it was alleged that children in these countries had died due to drinking cough syrup made in India. WHO had also described cough syrup as dangerous. During that time the Government of India had taken action against pharmaceutical companies.
After this, a warning was issued in Iraq also regarding cough syrup made in India. The World Health Organization had also said that the cough syrup made in India is not made as per the standards. Cough syrup can cause problems like kidney infection and diarrhea in children.
what is the reason
Epidemiologist Dr. Ajay Kumar says that even today there are many pharmaceutical companies which do not properly follow Good Manufacturing Practice for making medicines. Because of this, medicines are not made as per the prescribed standards. In some cases the medicine is correct, but its overdose causes side effects.
In the cases of side effects of cough syrup that have been reported in the last months, overdose of the medicine can be a major reason. Due to overdose, problems like kidney infection and stomach pain occur.
