So far 14 people have died in the floods in Sikkim, while many people are reported missing. The Meteorological Department has issued an alert of heavy rain in Sikkim. This disaster in Sikkim has once again reminded us of the dreadful scene of 1968, in which about 1000 people lost their lives.
The sudden flood in Teesta river after cloud burst late on Tuesday night in Sikkim has caused huge devastation. Many areas were filled with water and debris from the mountains. Along with this, many bridges and roads were washed away and about 100 people are missing. Meanwhile, 45 children who had gone to Gangtok from Varanasi have been rescued safely. All the children were trapped in the flood, on receiving information about which Sikkim Governor Laxman Acharya sent a rescue team to the spot.
The Meteorological Department has issued an alert of heavy rain in Sikkim, which can create great difficulty in relief and rescue work. However, this is not the first time that Sikkim has seen such a huge devastation. Exactly 55 years later, a disaster once again struck the Darjeeling-Sikkim region, which devastated the region once again. There were continuous rains for four days between 2 and 5 October 1968 in the Darjeeling-Sikkim region. This caused massive landslides and floods, causing extensive damage to property and infrastructure. More than 1,000 people were killed and thousands were displaced.
There was devastation in Sikkim in 1968
The Ambootia landslide, which occurred on 4 October 1968, was one of the most destructive landslides in the history of the Darjeeling-Sikkim region. It killed more than 500 people and buried an entire village. Heavy rainfall in 1968 was caused by a combination of several factors, including the monsoon season El Niño and the formation of a low pressure system in the Bay of Bengal. The rain was so heavy that the rivers overflowed and the dams broke.
Ambootia village was destroyed
The Ambootia landslide occurred in Darjeeling district of West Bengal. It was one of the most destructive landslides in the history of the Darjeeling-Sikkim region. It killed more than 500 people and buried an entire village.
Ambutia village was buried
The landslide occurred in Ambootiya village, about 16 kilometers from Darjeeling. This happened after a heavy rain, which caused a large amount of soil and rocks to fall down from the hills. The landslide had caused devastation in the entire village. The entire village had become a graveyard, which included many houses, schools and temples.
There was no warning system to prevent landslides, so the villagers were sleeping when it happened. The landslide was so devastating that the bodies of many people were never found. The government did not rehabilitate Ambootia village after the landslide. Instead, they built a memorial that remembers those killed in the landslide.
