Opposition alliance INDIA has got a landslide victory in the Autonomous Mountain Development Council-Kargil elections held in the Union Territory of Ladakh. In this election, National Conference (NC) and Congress together have captured 22 seats. The election results are being described as a wakeup call for BJP, because BJP has been able to get only two seats. On August 5, 2019, the Central Government abolished Article 370 and made Ladakh a Union Territory. After this, this was the first election of Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) in Kargil.
Election officials have said that elections were held on 26 seats on October 4 and 77.61 percent voting took place. The National Conference, which was part of the Indian alliance, got 12 seats in this election, after which it emerged as the largest party. Whereas Congress won 10 seats. BJP got 2 seats, while independent candidates won two seats. The administration nominates 4 members for LAHDC and they have voting rights. The new council will be formed before October 11.
The alliance was in direct competition with BJP.
Let us tell you that before this election, National Conference and Congress had announced an alliance. This alliance was in direct competition with BJP. In the last elections, BJP had won only one seat, whereas it had fielded 17 candidates. At the same time, Aam Aadmi Party had also contested elections on 4 seats, but it did not get anything. EVM was used for the first time in this election.
Why are the results a wakeup call for BJP?
In fact, since the removal of Article 370, assembly elections have not been held in Jammu-Kashmir and Ladakh. Before the assembly elections, BJP has suffered a crushing defeat in the LAHDC elections, while the INDIA alliance is proud. In such a situation, this election is a wakeup call for BJP. Opposition parties have come together only to stop BJP from coming to power at the Center for the third consecutive time, hence BJP's defeat in this election has filled the INDIA alliance with confidence.
What has Omar Abdullah said on the results?
After the victory in the LAHDC elections, senior National Conference leader and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah attacked the BJP and said, “This election result sends a message to all those forces and parties who have tried to control Jammu and Kashmir in an undemocratic and unconstitutional manner.” “The states of Kashmir and Ladakh have been divided without the consent of the people there.” He said that these election results are a warning for BJP. Now the time has come for BJP to stop hiding behind Raj Bhavan and unelected representatives.
The BJP was dealt a resounding defeat at the hands of the NC-Congress alliance in Kargil today. In celebration of our strong alliance with the Congress party, the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference is delighted to announce its victory in the LAHDC Kargil elections. This result…
Omar Abdullah also said that the legitimate wish of the people for a democratically elected government in Jammu and Kashmir should be accepted. Democracy demands that the voices of the people be heard and respected. We are making efforts to maintain the rights and aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
