The duration of Mahalakshmi Puja Pitru Paksha is 15 days. It starts every year from the full moon day of Bhadrapada and continues till the new moon day of Ashwin month. This time is considered very special for worshiping ancestors.

Actually, doing any auspicious work is prohibited during Pitru Paksha. But according to the scriptures, there is a day during Shraddha Paksha which is considered auspicious for fasting and worshiping Goddess Lakshmi. It is also known as Gajalakshmi Vrat or Mahalakshmi Vrat. On this day, the Gajalakshmi form of Goddess Lakshmi riding on an elephant is worshipped. It is said that worshiping Goddess Lakshmi on the Ashtami date of Shraddha Paksha brings blessings to the house and the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi remain on people.

Why is Mahalakshmi worship done during Shraddha Paksha?

According to the scriptures, Mahalakshmi Puja has a very special significance on the Ashtami date of Shraddha Paksha. It is believed that Lakshmi form of Adishakti ends her journey on earth on this day. After this, she starts her journey again from the first day of Navratri. It is believed that Lord Krishna advised Yudhishthir to observe this fast after the Pandavas lost everything in gambling. So that the lost kingdom and wealth can be regained. By fasting and worshiping Gaja Lakshmi, poverty never comes in the house. There is happiness in having children. Also, Mother Lakshmi fulfills all the wishes of her devotees.

How to worship Mahalakshmi?

To worship Mahalakshmi, after taking bath during Pradoshkaal, spread a red cloth in the west direction of the house and place S Chowki. Make octagons on it with saffron and sandalwood and place rice there and place a pot filled with water. Install the idol of Goddess Lakshmi near the Kalash. Keep a clay elephant near the idol. Do not forget to keep Shriyantra in front of the idol of Goddess Lakshmi.

Apart from this, keep gold and silver coins at the place of worship. Use lotus flower to worship Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. After this, worship Goddess Lakshmi duly with Kumkum, Akshat and flowers.
