Liaquat Ali Khan became the first Prime Minister of Pakistan. Before that, he was the Finance Minister of India in the interim government led by Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru. The budget he presented in 1946 was called a socialist budget but because of the heavy taxes, his budget was called anti-Hindu.
After Jinnah, he was also the biggest leader of the Muslim League. That is why Jinnah had given him a place in the interim government as the representative of the Muslim League. In the old Parliament House, he presented the first budget as the Indian Finance Minister and called it a socialist budget.
Industrialists were very angry with that budget. They thought that this would destroy the entire industry. Imposed 25 percent tax on Rs 1 lakh profit and doubled the corporate tax. Many more stringent taxes were already introduced in the budget. He had also announced the formation of a commission against tax evaders during the budget speech.
Hindus had dominance in industries
Big leaders like Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel believed that this budget is anti-Hindu. He also said that this is all a well-planned move. In fact, at that time, Hindus dominated the industries. There were also some Parsi entrepreneurs like Tata and Godrej. The only pharmaceutical company, Cipla, was owned by a Muslim family. Its founder was KA Hamid. At that time, industrialists like Ghanshyam Das Birla, Jaman Lal Bajaj were close to Congress. They also felt that the interests of industry had been ignored in the budget. Both Birla and Bajaj were very close to Mahatma Gandhi. Whenever there was a need for the freedom movement, these people used to provide money and resources.
This was also alleged
Liaquat Ali Khan, as Finance Minister, was also accused of delaying decisions in the cases of Hindu ministers. Sardar Patel, as the Home Minister, had said very strictly that without the permission of Liaquat Ali Khan, we cannot appoint even a peon. At that time people creating atmosphere in favor of Liaquat Ali Khan also came forward and even said that he could not be anti-Muslim because his wife was originally from a Hindu family. No one had any idea of the specifics of the budget because they had taken the budget papers from their home straight to the Parliament House.
When was the first budget of independent India presented?
For context, it should also be known that the first budget of independent India was presented on 26 November 1947, which in a way was a mere formality. There was no provision for any new tax in this. The regular budget of the government of independent India was to come after just a few months, hence this was done. Liaquat Ali Khan was born in a royal family on October 1, 1895 in Karnal, Haryana. Liaqat Ali Khan, who did B.Sc.-LLB from Aligarh Muslim University and LLM from Oxford, chose advocacy as his profession and simultaneously came closer to the Muslim League to try his hand in politics.
Become the first PM of Pakistan
Later, when his family got property in Muzaffarnagar, UP, they came here also. Liaquat Ali Khan also contested elections from here and also became an MLA in United Province. He was also the Vice President of the United Province Legislative Council from 1932 to 1940. Within no time he became a big leader of the Muslim League. His family was financially quite prosperous, hence he was also close to the British rulers.
When Pakistan was formed, the same Liaquat Ali Khan became the first Prime Minister. He was shot dead at a public meeting held in Rawalpindi on 16 October 1951. Although the security forces killed the attacker on the spot but they could not save their PM. The attacker was an Afghani, hence the secret of Liaquat Ali Khan's murder was buried with the death of the attacker. Till date the government of Pakistan has not been able to know why their first PM was murdered?
