On Friday morning in Ernakulam, Kerala, many people were stunned when a large number of youth were seen standing in a line for peon jobs. The surprising thing was that among many of these youth, some were B.Tech and some were graduates. All of them had come to take the cycle test to get a job on the post of peon.
The qualification required for the post of peon in a government office in Kerala was 7th pass. Besides, it was also mentioned in the advertisement that the candidate should know how to ride a bicycle. Despite having such low qualifications, many highly educated people were seen lining up for this job.
What did the candidates say?
The candidates who came to give the cycle test said that the government job of peon is also acceptable to them because this job is permanent and the salary is also better than other private jobs. In Kerala, a peon gets Rs 23 thousand as salary. Whereas in private jobs one gets less money than this. Allowances etc. are available in government whereas not in private.
How many candidates passed?
101 candidates passed the cycle test held on Friday. He said that there is nothing wrong in the job of a peon. This job is much better than tech companies and online food delivery services. Among the passed candidates, there were some who had done Diploma in Banking. They say that in today's era who does not want a permanent job?
How many are unemployed in Kerala?
According to the Union Ministry of Labor and Employment, a total of 5.1 lakh people have applied for employment in the year 2022, out of which 3.2 lakh are women, which is the highest in the country. The situation is that the unemployment rate in Kerala is continuously increasing. In one figure, in the year 2022, the number of unemployed people was stated to be 40 lakh.
Why cycle test for peon?
The tradition of cycle test for the post of peon is old but it continues in Kerala. The State Public Service Commission considers this test mandatory for peon posts in public sector agencies like Kerala State Financial Enterprises. Although the methods of transportation have changed in today's times, the government has not changed this rule.
However, women and physically disabled candidates have been given exemption in this rule. Government officials here say that this rule has already been in place, hence it is followed. However, this examination is mandatory only for office assistants. Not all class IV employees.
