Warning was received before the disaster in Sikkim, ignoring it proved costly


After the cloud burst and subsequent flood devastation in Sikkim, many questions have started being raised. This is because the team of scientists had already issued a warning regarding this disaster in Sikkim, which was ignored. Now the situation has become such that after the flood, destruction is visible everywhere.

So far, more than one and a half dozen people have died in the devastation caused by cloud burst over Lonak Lake and sudden flood in Teesta river in Sikkim, while around a hundred people are reported missing. Relief and rescue work is being done by the Army and NDRF to find the missing people. Meanwhile, a big information has come to light regarding Sikkim.

According to experts, a warning had been issued about the entire area even before this disaster, which was ignored. The team of government agencies and researchers had alerted not once but several times about the devastation caused by the bursting and floods of the deadly glacial lake in Sikkim.

This alert was issued two years ago i.e. in 2021. This study conducted in the year 2021 was also published in the journal 'Geomorphology'. It was told in the research that between 1962 and 2008 the glaciers have retreated about two kilometers, whereas between 2008 and 2019 the glaciers have retreated 400 meters.

ISRO had expressed fear of danger

According to media reports, the National Remote Sensing Center and the Indian Space Organization (ISRO) had informed about the dangers related to the lake in 2012-2013. After this, in 2016 also, a campaign was launched under the leadership of Sonam Wangchuk associated with the Student Education and Culture Movement and information and dangers related to the lake were given.

In the devastation that broke out in Lonak Lake early on Wednesday, 18 bodies have been recovered so far while a total of 98 people, including 22 soldiers, are reported missing. Officials said that 26 people injured in the devastation caused by the floods have been admitted to different hospitals in Sikkim. More than 22,000 people have been affected in the biggest disaster of the decade.

Cloud burst over Lohan Lake, Teesta river in spate

Actually, a cloud burst over Lohan Lake in North Sikkim. There was sudden flood in Teesta Nahi due to cloud burst in the lake. The flood water overflowed like the Chungthang Dam. The flow was so strong that it destroyed the infrastructure of the power plant and then the water moved towards the cities and towns situated in the low-lying area.

According to PTI report, 11 bridges were washed away in the state due to the devastating floods. Along with this, many houses including water pipelines and sewer lines have been destroyed in the four affected districts of the state. Many houses are still submerged in water, efforts are being made to save the people trapped in them.
