According to reports, on Wednesday afternoon, more than 100 local people had gone to the unfenced open mine (OCP) at Narayankuri in Raniganj police station area to allegedly steal coal. Most of these included women. A local told that suddenly a big chunk of coal fell on him.

Coal smugglers do illegal digging work

Local people said that most of the people came out safely but there was a possibility of at least 6-7 people being trapped. Of these, three bodies have been taken out. The deceased were identified as 38-year-old Dinesh Ruidas, 17-year-old Sumir Bauri and 21-year-old Surjit Sen, who were residents of the surrounding area. Some people are reportedly still trapped under the debris. A team led by Irfan Ahmed Ansari, Director General, Mine Safety Zone 1, Sitarampur, started investigating the incident and visited the spot.

All the bodies were sent to Asansol District Hospital for post-mortem. According to reports, coal smugglers are very active here. They allegedly employ “laborers” to steal coal and carry out illegal excavation work. The incident happened on Wednesday and the local police was allegedly trying to hide this incident. When former Asansol MP and CPM leader Bansa Gopal Choudhary got information about this, he talked to the district administration and the matter came to light.
