On this day, sister applies tilak to her brother and there is a tradition of tying Mauli. This festival is celebrated the next day of Govardhan Puja and 2 days after Diwali.
On the day of Bhai Dooj, sisters observe a fast for the well-being of their brother and pray for his long life. Like Rakshabandhan, Mauli ties a thread on the wrist of the brothers and does tilak. On this day, there is a tradition of giving coconut to the brothers after sweetening their mouths. When is Bhai Dooj?
According to the Panchang, the second date of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month will start from 2:36 pm on 14th November and will continue till 1:45 pm the next day on 15th November. Thus, due to Udaya Tithi, Bhai Dooj will be celebrated on 15th November. Sisters can apply tilak to brothers at any time during this date. On 15th November, on the day of Bhai Dooj, Rahukaal is from 12:03 pm to 1:24 pm. In such a situation, Tilak should not be done during the time of Rahukaal. The auspicious time for worship on the day of Bhai Dooj will be from 6:44 to 9:24 in the morning.
Why is Bhai Dooj celebrated?
The festival of Bhai Dooj is considered a symbol of strengthening the brother-sister relationship. On the day of Bhai Dooj, sisters take bath and worship and then apply tilak to the brother, after which the brother gives gifts to his sister. There is a mythological story behind celebrating Bhai Dooj. It is said that on this day, Yamraj had gone home on the invitation of his sister Yamuna, after which sister Yamuna gave great hospitality to Yam by applying tilak to him and then gifted him a coconut shell. Since then the tradition of celebrating Bhai Dooj started. On this day, if any brother visits his sisters' house and eats food and accepts their hospitality, all his wishes are fulfilled.
How to apply tilak to brother?
Before doing Tilak on Bhai Dooj, it is very important that you have sufficient puja material. For this, take a plate, small lamp, tikka, roli, rice, coconut, batasha, betel leaves and sweets. Before applying Tilak, sisters should take bath in the morning and wear clean clothes. Then the brother should be made to sit in the east or north direction and after applying tilak with Roli and Akshat, he should be given a coconut as a gift. Before applying Tilak, brother must tie a cloth or handkerchief on his head. After getting the tilak applied, brothers should touch the feet of their sisters and seek their blessings and also give them some gifts.
