The festival of Bhai Dooj is celebrated exactly three days after Diwali. This year Bhai Dooj is falling on 15th November. Like Rakshabandhan, Bhai Dooj is also a festival of brothers and sisters. On this day, all the sisters wish for the long life of their brothers and also observe a fast. Just as sisters tie a thread on the wrist of their brother on Rakshabandhan, in the same way, on the day of Bhai Dooj, sisters also bless their brothers with Roli and Mauli ties it. After this, she feeds sweets to her brother and gives him a coconut.
Along with Diwali, the festival of Bhai Dooj is celebrated with great pomp all over India. There are different beliefs to celebrate it at different places. While in Northern India, sisters apply Tilak and Akshat as gifts to their brothers, whereas in Eastern India, there is a tradition of gifting anything by applying Tilak after blowing the conch shell. On this day, sisters keep a fast for the long life of their brothers and break the fast only after feeding the brother.
Why is Bhai Dooj celebrated?
On Bhai Dooj, there is a religious belief of serving food to the brother after applying Tilak. It is said that the sister who offers tilak and food with full devotion and respect and the brother who accepts the hospitality of his sister, all their wishes are fulfilled and there is no fear of Yamraj.
It is believed that if a brother goes to his sister's house and eats food, he can be saved from untimely death. It is said that if brothers and sisters celebrate this festival with full rituals, their chances of dying in an accident are greatly reduced. Also, by celebrating Bhai Dooj, sisters and brothers get happiness, prosperity, property and money.
Mythology of Bhai Dooj
According to the story of Skandapuran, Lord Surya and his wife Sangya had two children, son Yamraj and daughter Yamuna. Yama used to punish sinners. Yamuna was pure of heart and she felt sad seeing people's troubles, hence she lived in Goloka. One day when sister Yamuna called brother Yamraj for food in Goloka, Yam freed the inhabitants of hell before going to his sister's house.
According to another story, Lord Krishna went to meet his sister Subhadra after defeating the demon Narakasura, since then this day is celebrated as Bhai Dooj. It is believed that by honoring a brother by applying tilak on his forehead like Subhadra, the love between brothers and sisters increases. On this day, it is also believed that brothers and sisters take bath in Yamuna together. On this day, if you sincerely ask for forgiveness for your sins, Yamraj forgives you.
