What is mythology?
According to the legend, Surya Dev's wife Sangya had two children. Son Yamraj and daughter Yamuna. Sister Yamuna loved her brother Yamraj very much and used to request him to come to her house, but due to being busy in his work, Yamraj was not able to go to his sister's house. Once on the second date of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month, Yamraj reached her house on the invitation of sister Yamuna. In the joy of going to his sister's house, Yamraj freed the inhabitants of hell for a day.
On reaching Yamraj's house, Yamuna welcomed her brother with great respect and prepared various dishes to welcome him and applied tilak on Yamraj's forehead. When Yamraj started leaving Yamuna's house, he asked his sister to ask for the groom of her choice. Instead of asking for the groom of her choice, sister Yamuna said to Yamraj, “Brother, promise me that you will come to my house every year.” Yamraj gave this promise to his sister, after which Bhai Dooj is celebrated traditionally.
How did giving coconuts start?
While bidding farewell to Yamraj, sister Yamuna presented him a coconut ball. When Yamraj asked the reason behind gifting the coconut, Yamuna said, “This coconut will keep reminding you of me.” Since then there is a tradition of giving coconut on this day. It is believed that on this day, any brother who will go to his sister's house and accept their hospitality and any sister who will invite her to her brother's house and have food, will not be troubled by the fear of Yamraj. On this day, whichever brothers and sisters take a dip together in the Yamuna river, they will also get relief from the wrath of Yama. By taking a dip in Yamuna on the day of Bhai Dooj, a person's sins are also washed away.
