At present, transgenders are being recruited in the armies of 19 countries of the world including America, Britain and Israel. Netherlands is the first country in the world where it was started in 1974.
According to the report of Indian Express, Indian Armed Forces are exploring the possibility of their recruitment in the army. For this, a group has been specially formed which will study how they can be deployed in the defense sector. If this initiative is successful then it will prove to be a big step towards bringing equality in the country. How many challenges are there still?
Till now transgenders have not got entry in any part of the Indian Army. However, suggestions have been given in this regard from time to time. According to the report, if eunuchs get entry into the army, they will not be given any relief from training to selection. Nor will there be any concession in different types of postings.
If the government takes steps in this direction, there will be many challenges. An officer says that if this happens then it cannot be seen as an employment opportunity. Many challenges will have to be faced here. Like- house for their living, toilet and working pattern.
When did the matters come under discussion?
Notably, the Indian Navy had dismissed Sabi Giri, formerly known as Manish Kumar Giri, in 2017. At the time of his dismissal, the Navy had said in a statement that he had undergone gender reassignment surgery at a private hospital during his leave. As a result, he was administratively dismissed from service.
According to the report of First Post, in 2020, BSF, CRPF and SSB had told the Central Government that they will recruit transgenders for the officer cadre post of Assistant Commandant.
In 2015, Tamil Nadu appointed the country's first police officer. At the same time, Chhattisgarh became the first state to actively recruit transgender community in the police force.
First recruitment in Netherlands
For the first time, recruitment of eunuchs in the army started in 1974. It became the first country to do so. After this, many countries of the world gave entry to eunuchs in the army. After the Netherlands, Sweden started in 1976, Denmark in 1878, Norway in 1979 and then the same trend started in Canada, America and Britain.
