Women are saving men's lives, at the forefront of organ donation

Even today in India, people have misconception regarding organ donation. Due to this, the number of organ donors is also very less. Every year thousands of people wait for transplant, but due to lack of donor the transplant is not possible. Among the few people who donate organs, most are women. There were 36,640 transplants in the country from 1995 to 2021. Of these, 29,000 organ recipients were men, while only 6,945 women had undergone organ transplant. Four out of every five people who donate organs are women. Whereas four out of every five organ recipients are men. This data shows that women are far ahead of men in terms of organ donation.

Women are also ahead in the matter of living organ donation. According to research published in the Experimental and Clinical Journal, 80 percent of the living donors in organ transplants conducted in 2019 were women. 80 percent of those who received organs from them were men. This means that men are nowhere near women in terms of organ donation. Women are also liver donors. That means, they are far ahead of men in donating organs while alive. A living donor can donate his kidney and liver. In most cases, it is women who donate kidneys to men.

What is the reason for organ donation?

Experts say that women donate organs not only to their husbands but also to their children and siblings. The reason why women donate organs is to avoid financial loss. Women feel that if they donate organs, men may have to sit at home. In such a situation, there is a risk of financial loss. That's why women donate organs. If a child in the family has to donate an organ, then only women come forward in that too.

Mayuri, transplant coordinator at DY Medical College, Pune, says that she has been working in this field for the last 15 years, but till date she has seen only one such case in which men have donated organs to a woman. In all other cases, it is only women who donate organs. Women do this to save the family from household responsibilities and financial losses.
