There have been more than 300 earthquakes in the country in the last four years. From 2020 to November 2023, a total of 310 earthquakes have been felt. This data has been released by the Central Government. A significant increase has been seen in this year i.e. 2023. The earth has shaken 124 times this year. The intensity of the earthquakes that occurred during this period varied.
According to government data, earthquake tremors were felt 124 times in 2023. The intensity of 97 earthquakes was between 3.0 and 3.9. At the same time, tremors of 4.0 to 4.9 intensity were felt 21 times. Four times the intensity of the earthquake was between 5.0 to 5.9 while twice strong tremors were felt. Its intensity was between 6.0 to 6.9. Meaning, the maximum number of earthquakes occurred this year in the last four years.
It has been said in the data that there has been a huge increase in earthquake activity in 2023. The main reason for this is the activation of Almora Fault in western Nepal. Due to this activity, an earthquake of 5.8 magnitude occurred on January 24, 2023. Strong earthquake tremors were felt on 3 October and 3 November 2023. The intensity of the earthquake that occurred on October 3 was 6.2, while the intensity of the earthquake that occurred on November was 6.4.
Let us tell you that due to being situated on the border of two huge tectonic plates, earthquakes occur frequently in the Himalayan region extending from North India to North-East India. The collision of these plates causes earthquakes in both India and Nepal. Whenever there is an earthquake in Nepal and the Himalayan region, Delhi and North India have to face it.
