Death penalty is common in Iran. Here, death sentence is given even for small crimes, so murder of someone has become a big deal. Iran hanged a 23 year old youth today i.e. on Tuesday. This person was found guilty of waging a 'war against God' and 'corruption on earth'. The name of the person who was hanged is Mohammad Ghobadlou. Ghobadlu was hanged even though his mental condition was not good.
Ghobadlu was accused of murdering an Iranian official. Iran said that Ghobadlu had crushed a local official during a protest in Robat Karim in Tehran province in September 2022. The matter reached the court. Two years ago, Judge Abolghasem Salavati of the Iranian Revolutionary Court found Ghobadlu guilty of waging a 'war against God' and 'corruption on earth' and sentenced him to death.
Ghobadlu sentenced to death twice
Ghobadlu was sentenced to death twice. The first death sentence was given by the Revolutionary Court on 16 November 2022. Ghobadlu was sentenced to this punishment for 'corruption on earth'. The Supreme Court had also upheld this punishment. At the same time, the second death sentence was given by the Criminal Court of Tehran Province. This punishment was given to Ghobadlu on the charge of murder of an Iranian official.
What is 'corruption on earth'?
In Iran, those who actually commit heinous crimes are sentenced to 'corruption on earth'. People who oppose Islamic law, who adopt aggressive attitude against the country. Those people who spread corruption socially and politically. Those who are accused of murder and corruption are kept in the category of 'corruption on earth'.
Ghobadlu's lawyer informed about hanging
According to human rights group Amnesty International, Ghobadlu's lawyer Amir Raesian informed about Ghobadlu's execution on Monday. He said that he received a notification from the Tehran General and Revolutionary Court that Mohammad Ghobadlou will be hanged on January 23, 2024.
Ghobadlu was mentally disturbed
According to Amnesty, Ghobadlu was mentally ill since the age of 15. He was under the care of a psychiatric hospital. According to Amnesty International, international law prohibits the death penalty against mentally disturbed people. But where Iran is concerned, no law works. Hanging is common here.
Nearly 700 people were hanged last year
Let us tell you that after the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody, death sentences increased in Iran. The government has become strict on nationwide protests. According to a report, at least 229 people involved in this protest were hanged. At the same time, last year about 700 people were hanged in Iran. This number was the highest in the last 8 years. Earlier in 2015, 972 people were hanged.
