ED had arrested Goyal on September 1 last year in the case of alleged bank fraud. He is currently in judicial custody in Arthur Road Jail here. He had filed his bail application before Special Judge MG Deshpande. He was presented in the court on Saturday.

Naresh Goyal, accused of alleged fraud of Rs 538 crore in Canara Bank and founder of Jet Airways, expressed such a wish, which left everyone stunned. He said with folded hands in the special court on Saturday that he has lost hope of life and it would be better to die in jail than to live in this situation. According to court records, a teary-eyed 70-year-old Goyal said he misses his wife Anita, who is in the final stages of cancer.

He was produced in the court on Saturday and during the proceedings he requested for a personal hearing, which was accepted by the judge. According to the court diary, Goyal said with folded hands and trembling that his health had deteriorated greatly.

Goyal told the problem

Goyal said that his wife is lying on the bed and his only daughter is also unwell. He said even jail staff have limitations in helping them. The judge said that I listened to him carefully and observed him carefully when he was presenting his views. I found that his body was trembling. They need support to stand. Goyal explained in detail about his health condition, wife's illness, various problems like visiting JJ Hospital etc.

The judge said that I have considered everything he said. I assured the accused that he would not be left destitute and that his mental and physical health would be taken every possible care and treatment would be provided. The court directed his lawyers to take appropriate steps regarding his health. In his bail application last month, Goyal had cited various ailments like heart, prostate, bone etc and claimed that there are rational grounds to believe that he is not guilty. ED has filed a reply on his application. Now the next hearing of the case will be on January 16.
