Regarding which new steps are now being taken. Let us know the expert's opinion on this.

Seeing the pilots, most of the people think that what a lavish life they will have, but after a recent incident, an atmosphere of uncertainty has arisen in the aviation sector of India. Already, due to flight delays and long working hours, pilots and other airline crew members have to work under a lot of pressure and now some time back, the incident of an IndiGo pilot being slapped by a passenger has once again come to the fore. Once again, everyone's attention has been drawn towards the increasing stress level and mental health of airline crew members.

On August 17, 2023, Indigo pilot Manoj Balasubrahmany suddenly fainted and he was on duty at Nagpur Airport at that time. He died within a few hours. This incident also raised many questions about how airline crews have to work for long hours despite fatigue and stress. At the same time, experts say that airline crew members need mental health therapists. Presently, in this report of reporter Ashish Sharma, let us know what steps have been taken to deal with this problem in the aviation sector.

Expert suggestion

Talking about this, Mumbai-based psychiatrist and mind therapist Dr. Ruhi Satija says that it is often said that taking stress is a good thing, stress has been normalized in our society, because we think that it motivates us. It makes us competitive, but beyond a certain point, stress is very bad. Stress has adverse effects not only mentally but also physically.

There is a risk of these diseases

According to Dr. Ruhi, due to stress, a hormone called cortisol increases in our body, which after a time starts reducing your thinking power and decision making ability. Your sleep and eating patterns get affected and you start feeling tired. Due to long term stress, diseases like diabetes, hypertension are stress related.

Do these things to reduce stress level

Doctor Ruhi says that if a person is in such a situation or job where he has a lot of daily stress, or the nature of his job is such that it is very important for him to remain calm, like doctors and pilots, who have to handle emergency situations. They have to do things and they have to take moment to moment decisions. It is important for any person who is struggling with mental stress to pay attention to his self-care. Especially mental care hygiene, that is, they should do some activities which help in staying calm, like meditation, breathing exercises, mindfulness based therapy. This can help in reducing stress. Eating right and exercising daily also helps in reducing stress. If you are struggling with this problem for a long time and are not seeing any relief even after adopting all the methods, then take help from a professional.

New steps taken to reduce pressure on pilots

Now taking lessons from this incident, steps are being taken in this direction by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. Therefore, keeping in mind the shift timings of airline members etc., new parameters have been set so that the work pressure and increasing stress on the pilots can be reduced. The new rules issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation to balance the work life of pilots can be implemented by June 2024.

reduced shift time

Till now the maximum flight duty duration of pilots was 13 hours, which after the reform will be reduced by 3 hours i.e. now the pilots' shift will be 10 hours. At the same time, during operation of flights at night, the maximum number of landings has been reduced from 6 to 2.

You will get so many hours of time to rest after a long flight

Under the new rules, time limits have also been fixed for long distance flights and it states that long distance flights cannot exceed 17 hours. At the same time, after any long flight, pilots will be given at least 120 hours of rest.

Report will be filed every three months

Under the new rules, pilots will not be put on duty for more than two consecutive nights. Every three months, airlines will have to file a report regarding fatigue and stress of pilots during their shift work.
