Yashpal Sharma, who played the character of Lakkha in one of Aamir Khan's most memorable films Lagaan, has said that he liked his character in the film more than Aamir's character of Bhuvan. In an interview, Yashpal told that when he got the role of Lakkha in Lagaan, I was very happy because I found Lakkha's role to be the best in the film. In fact, I liked Lakha's role more than Aamir Khan's lead role, because there were many variations in it. Negative, positive, love angle and jealousy. There were many emotions in that character. He told that he had to audition for the role of Lakkha.

He told that he got a message in which it was said that you have been selected for the role of Lakkha. Yashpal said that he was very happy that he got the role and that he would work with Aamir Khan.

He said that I was from a poor family but I told myself not to settle for less than Rs 1 lakh. But I was also scared that they might take someone else. So I thought I should ask for Rs 50 thousand. I was ready to do the work even if they give me Rs 20,000.

However, when I reached her office, Reena ji told me that she does not have much budget, hence she is giving only Rs 1.5 lakh to everyone. On this I said no madam, please give me at least two lakhs. Don't know what happened at that time but she agreed. Yashpal said that later I was thinking that even if I had asked for Rs 5-10 lakh, perhaps she would have agreed.
