On the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Congress has said that the true tribute to the Father of the Nation would be to not allow the flame of truth and harmony to be extinguished in the storm of hatred. The party also said that those who glorify Mahatma Gandhi's assassin Nathuram Godse should not be allowed to define the idea of India.
In a post on 'X', Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge quoted a thought of Mahatma Gandhi and said that our enemy is fear. We think it's hate but it's fear. On Martyr's Day, we pay our respect to Bapu, the moral guardian of our nation. We must pledge to fight against those who want to destroy their ideals based on 'Sambhava' and 'Sarvodaya' (progress for all). He said that everything will have to be done to protect India which is united in diversity and will also have to ensure justice, equality and brotherhood among the people.
'The flame of goodwill should not be extinguished'
In a post, former Congress President Rahul Gandhi said that on this day the ideology of hatred and violence had snatched Pujya Bapu from the country. Pointing towards RSS and BJP, he said that today the same thinking wants to snatch away their principles and ideals from us. The Congress leader said that the flame of truth and harmony should not be extinguished in this storm of hatred. He said that this would be a true tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.
An early morning prayer meeting was organized at the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra camp site in Araria, Bihar to remember Mahatma Gandhi on the date of his assassination 76 years ago. In a post on Twitter, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh shared pictures of the prayer meeting, where Rahul Gandhi and several other leaders paid tribute to the Father of the Nation. Ramesh said that our fight is against those ideologies which opposed and rejected him during his lifetime and now again and again efforts are being made to usurp him. Those who glorify Godse should not be allowed to define the idea of India.
'Gandhi's values will prevail'
On this occasion, former Union Minister and senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram said that even though Mahatma Gandhi may have been assassinated, there are millions of Indians, especially common Indians, who give importance to his teachings. He said that today these values are being challenged, but in the end Gandhiji's values will win.
