According to the mythological story

Brahma Vaivarta Purana, there were two demons named Mali and Sumali. Both of these demons were in severe physical pain due to disrespecting the Sun God and both of them were not able to free themselves from it. After much suffering, both the demons decided to go to Lord Shiva. Both the demons reached Lord Shiva and narrated their plight. Hearing the plight of both, Lord Shiva got angry and in anger he attacked the Sun God with a trident. 

Sage Kashyap cursed Lord Shiva and

due to the attack of Lord Shiva, Sun God fell down from his chariot due to which darkness spread in the entire creation. When Sage Kashyap, father of Suryadev, came to know about this, he became angry. He cursed Lord Shiva to be sad over the condition of his son. It was only after this curse that Lord Shiva beheaded his son Ganesha.

Bholenath sacrificed his life

when he saw that there was darkness in the universe and his anger subsided. After this Lord Shiva gave life to Suryadev. After this, when sage Kashyap came to know about the curse, he decided to sacrifice everyone. Then Suryadev came back riding on his chariot and started illuminating the entire creation.

Importance of worshiping Sun God:

Lord Brahma told the demons Mali and Sumali about the importance of worshiping Sun God. After this, both the demons worshiped Suryadev, which pleased Suryadev and freed them from physical pain.
