The Argentine government has accused an Iranian minister of attacking a Jewish community center in Argentina in 1994. 85 people were killed and more than 300 were injured in this attack.
Argentina had requested Interpol to arrest Iran's Interior Minister in connection with the bombing of the Jewish community center in Buenos Aires. Iran has called this request of Argentina illegal. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani said, “We strongly condemn the false accusations made by Argentinian judges against Iranian citizens in the case.” Iran claimed that western countries want to arrest their minister.
Let us tell you that on April 12, the Argentine court blamed Iran for the attack on a Jewish community center in Buenos Aires in 1994 and the bombing against the Israeli embassy two years earlier. 85 and 29 people were killed in these attacks.
Demand for arrest of Iranian minister
Argentina's Foreign Ministry had said on Tuesday that Iranian Minister Ahmed Vahidi is part of the delegation going from Tehran to Pakistan and Sri Lanka. It was also said that Interpol has issued a red notice for his arrest on the request of Argentina. In the statement, Argentina had also asked the Government of Pakistan and Lanka to arrest Wahidi.
But Iran's official media agency IRNA reported that Vahidi had returned to Iran on Tuesday. Speaking to AFP, a Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry official said Vahidi was not part of the Iranian delegation that arrived in the country on Wednesday.
How did the attack happen?
On July 18, 1994, there was a suicide attack on the Jewish Community Center in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In which Argentine Israeli Mutual Association (AMIA) was targeted. A bomb-laden van entered the AMIA building and subsequently exploded, killing 85 people and injuring more than 300. To date, this is the deadliest terrorist attack in Argentina's history.
