How will the poor reach their plate with roti, flour may become expensive, wheat reserves in the country are decreasing

The stock of wheat in government warehouses is continuously decreasing. The situation is such that the stock of wheat in the warehouses has reached a 16-year low. Due to this, there is a possibility of flour becoming expensive in the coming time. Read this news...

There was a time when India had to import wheat from other countries of the world. Then the Green Revolution took place in the country and we became self-sufficient in terms of food grains. Today the situation is such that the government is giving free food grains to 80 crore people of the country. At the same time, we are exporting wheat or flour from Turkey to Egypt and Europe. But soon flour will become expensive in the country and can ruin the pocket of the common man.

Yes, the stock of wheat in the country's godowns is decreasing at this time. According to the rules, there should be enough wheat in the country's godowns at all times to meet the requirement of three months (about 138 lakh tons). According to media reports, before the government started purchasing wheat this time, the stock of wheat in government godowns was only 75 lakh tons. Earlier, the stock of wheat was less than this, 58 lakh tons during 2007-08.

You may have to import food grains for free

The government is continuously buying wheat to complete the wheat stock. So far the government has bought 264 lakh tonnes of wheat. Whereas the target is 372 lakh tonnes. Not only this, the government has also extended the time for wheat purchase till 22 June, although wheat is not reaching the markets in that much quantity. If the situation remains the same then the government will have to immediately import wheat to distribute food grains to the poor.

Haven't imported for a long time

India's wheat exports have increased in the last few years. While India last imported 15 lakh tonnes of wheat from Australia and Ukraine in 2017-18. At the same time, 80 lakh tonnes of wheat was exported from the country in 2021-22, 55 lakh tonnes in 2022-23 and 5 lakh tonnes in 2023-24.

Flour can be expensive

Due to shortage of stock, the prices of wheat are continuously increasing. It has increased by 8% in a year. Its prices have also increased in the last few days. Flour mill owners are waiting for the government wheat auction to be held in the festive season after Rakhi, due to which the prices of wheat will come down.

At present, the price of wheat in the open market is 2600 to 2700 rupees per quintal. In such a situation, flour made from expensive wheat will also be expensive. According to experts, due to this, the price of flour can reach 31 rupees per kg in the coming 15 days, which is currently at the price of 28 rupees.

To control the prices of wheat, the government has imposed a stock limit for traders. Now they cannot store more than 5,000 quintals of wheat.
