Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi will be the new chief of the Indian Army. He will replace General Manoj Pandey on June 30. Upendra Dwivedi is an alumnus of Sainik School, Rewa in Madhya Pradesh. During his career spanning over 39 years, he has held commanding positions in challenging environments across the country.

On February 19 this year, Upendra Dwivedi took over as the Deputy Chief of the Army. Earlier, Dwivedi was the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Northern Command from 2022-2024.

Upendra Dwivedi is an alumnus of Sainik School, Rewa in Madhya Pradesh. During his career spanning over 39 years, he has held command positions in challenging environments across the country. He has commanded units in the Kashmir Valley as well as Rajasthan. He has been a Sector Commander in counter-terrorism environment in the North East and Inspector General of Assam Rifles.

Upendra Dwivedi has also commanded the Rising Star Corps on the western borders. He commanded the Northern Army in a challenging environment on both the northern and western borders. During this period, apart from conducting anti-terrorism operations in Jammu and Kashmir, he provided strategic guidance on the northern and western borders.

Upendra Dwivedi was also involved in talks with China to resolve the border dispute issue. He also contributed to the modernization of the largest command of the Indian Army. He has also worked on important posts in the Mountain Division, Strike Corps and Army Headquarters. He has also contributed in equipping the security forces with modern weapons.

As Director General of Infantry, Lieutenant General led the procurement of weapons for the three armies. The result was that the capability of the armed forces improved. He has also held training related positions. He has done M.Phil. in Defence and Management. Apart from this, he has two master's degrees in Strategic Studies and Military Science.
