According to mythology, Maharishi Vyas also advised Bhima to keep the fast of Nirjala Ekadashi because Bhima could not keep the fast of other Ekadashis. Due to the virtuous effect of the fast of Nirjala Ekadashi, Bhima went to Vaikunth Dham in the end. Mythological story of Ekadashi fast

Once, seeing his brothers and mother Kunti observing different Ekadashi fasts, Bhima also tried to observe this fast, but Bhimasena was very hungry, due to which he could not observe Ekadashi fast. Bhimasena told his problem to Maharishi Vyas and asked him for a solution by which he could get the fruits of all Ekadashis, but he did not have to face the difficulty of fasting. Then Maharishi Vyas advised him to observe Nirjala Ekadashi fast, in which one has to stay without water and food for the whole day. But by observing this fast, one gets the fruits of all the Ekadashis of the year. Then Bhimasena did the same and went to heaven. Therefore, Nirjala Ekadashi is also known as 'Bhimaseni Ekadashi'.
