He himself revealed that the film was offered to him and he had also agreed. During an interview with Rediff, Shah Rukh told that he had signed Nayak. He had taken only 1 rupee as signing amount. He had also told Shankar that he would give him his dates for the film.

Actually Nayak was the Hindi remake of the Tamil film Mudhalvan. Shah Rukh Khan liked this film very much, but later he refused to work in the Hindi remake Nayak. Shah Rukh also said that the concept of one day CM in the Tamil film worked well, but in North India he was skeptical about this concept. He also talked openly with Shankar about this, but things did not work out. The director wanted to make the film the same as it was made in Tamil. Because of this, Shah Rukh Khan refused to work in the film. After which the makers signed Anil Kapoor and the film proved to be a superhit.
