According to the legend, Lord Shiva became very angry with the Pandavas for shedding the blood of their own people in the Mahabharata war. After which the Pandavas reached Kashi to meet Shiva to apologize. But Shiva disappeared from there and went to Kedarnath Dham. When the Pandavas reached Kedarnath Dham chasing Shiva, the Lord took the form of a buffalo.

When the Pandavas recognized Shiva, he started sinking into the earth, meanwhile the mace bearer Bhima caught Shiva in the form of a buffalo, during this time his mouth had reached another place and only his body was left in Kedarnath.
