In the match being played in Guyana, host West Indies won the toss and decided to bowl first and invited Papua New Guinea to bat. Batting first, Papua New Guinea scored 136 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in the stipulated 20 overs. Caribbean all-rounder Andre Russell played an important role in stopping them on such a low score. Russell took 2 wickets for just 19 runs in 3 overs.
Andre Russell completes 50 T20 International wickets for West Indies
The West Indies all-rounder completed 50 wickets in T20 Internationals as soon as he took his first wicket in the match in the form of Charles Amini of Papua New Guinea. Andre Russell has become the sixth bowler to achieve this feat for the West Indies in the shortest format of the game at the international level.
The list of Caribbean bowlers who have taken 50 or more wickets in T20 Internationals includes the names of Dwayne Bravo (78 wickets), Jason Holder (66 wickets), Samuel Badri (54 wickets), Sunil Narine (52 wickets) and Sheldon Cottrell (52). Now Andre Russell has also become a part of this bowlers' club.
It is worth noting that Andre Russell made his T20 International debut against Pakistan in 2011. Russell has played 76 matches so far, bowling in 65 innings and taking 51 wickets at an average of 33.18 and a strike rate of 21.10. However, he has also conceded runs at an economy rate of 9.45 in this format.
In the intervening years, Russell had distanced himself from the national team due to franchise cricket, but he made a comeback last year and is also playing in the T20 World Cup this year. West Indies will hope that Russell makes good use of the experience gained while playing around the world and helps the team win the title for the third time.
