Mahadev had consumed the poison that came out during the churning of the ocean. Mahadev drank the cup of poison and kept it in his throat. Due to which his throat turned blue and he came to be known as Neelkanth. It is considered auspicious to see the Neelkanth bird as soon as you wake up in the morning on Dussehra. In olden times, some people in rural areas used to go from house to house with the Neelkanth bird and knock on the door.
